The Top 3 Benefits of Potholing

We offer our potholing services across South East Queensland. Find out the top three benefits of potholing here.

Potholing is a non-destructive digging process that uses vacuum excavation to dig precision holes around utility lines to expose them. This precise hole is small and used for exploratory purposes by digging along the proposed path of underground construction to check no conflict or interruptions exists with subsurface construction projects. The main benefits of potholing are preventing damage to utilities, cost-effectiveness, time-efficiency, safety, and uses in diverse applications.

           1. Prevent Damage to Utilities

Potholing prevents damage to utilities by using sucker trucks which use compressed air or water to remove earth to locate the utilities. Replacement or repair will be necessary if other methods of digging cut or damage underground utilities. Particularly damage to fibre optic lines that can be extremely sensitive. Replacing or repairing utilities is labour-intensive, costly and slows down project progression. The vacuum excavation method ensures utilities remain undamaged and the project can continue as scheduled.

           2. Cost-Effective, Time-Efficient and Safe

Using a vacuum excavator or hydro excavator instead of a shovel for potholing has its cost, time and safety advantages. It can be expensive to damage underground utilities with project downtime costs and contractor fines. As opposed to heavy equipment, hydro and air pressure from vacuum excavation potholing does not damage existing utilities as water and air can manoeuvre around the sensitive utilities. Potholing gives the operator an instant clear view in the underground hole being dealt with. Potholing is a safe process as any risk of cutting or damaging any electrical or telecommunication lines is eliminated.

           3. Use in Diverse Applications

Potholing is used on diverse projects in a variety of industries. Potholing with pressurised water or air is important to locate various utilities including gas pipes, water lines and fibre optic cables. There are many different companies and industries that repeatedly utilise potholing for oil refineries, engineering services, barge operations and pipeline companies.

High pressure water blasting is an efficiently and environmentally sensitive solution for surface preparation and intensive cleaning. This cleaning service is frequently used to clear and clean drains, pipes, septic tanks, roads, concrete and natural stone surfaces. Water blasting projects generate liquid waste which then needs to be safely removed from the worksite.

We offer our superior drain cleaning service across South East Queensland. Find out the best way to clean your drains here.

           CCTV Inspection Camera

The first step in draining cleaning is to thoroughly inspect the type of drain blockage that is being dealt with. A CCTV inspection camera is used for drain or pipe inspection of the blockage or checking the drain health to take preventative measures. The CCTV inspection camera produces real-time data of your drain or pipe to allow you to decide what drain cleaning method is right for your situation. The top two drain cleaning methods are drain cleaners and jet rodders.

           Drain Cleaners

A popular drain cleaning method is using drain cleaners that are available in both recycling and standard combo units. These clog removers are compact, easy to transport and suitable for tight access areas. Drain cleaners are also chemical products that are used to unblock sewer pipes or clogged wastewater drains.

           Jet Rodders

Another drain cleaning process involves utilising jet rodders. Jet rodders are high pressure jetting systems that can funnel through drains and pipes of any size. This hydro jetting system works by using high pressurised water to break through blockages and clogs. Hydro pressure cleaning is a safe and effective process designed to pump water up to 5000psi to thoroughly clean drains.

If you are a person who works or has worked for a construction company and have undertaken excavation projects, you may have been introduced to a vacuum truck. Vacuum trucks can be utilised for a range of projects including underground utility locating as well as digging precise holes and foundations for large construction projects. How Does a Vacuum Truck Operate?

In order to understand how the vacuum truck works, we first need to understand the different features:

             – The section where the operator sits and controls the vehicle.

            The Pump

             – Draws power from the engine to provide suction.

            The Primary Chamber

             – Catches all of the liquid waste and other material. In-built with a mechanism that doesn’t allow for waste to get to the pump.

            The Secondary Chamber

             – Protects the pump if the primary chamber gets too full.

            The Discharge Valve

             – Dispose of liquids/materials

            The Intake Valve

             – Where the vacuum hose is attached to begin suction.

The vacuum truck works by the pump providing suction to the vacuum hose through the intake valve. When the hose starts sucking, the material waste is then transferred to the primary chamber. If however, the primary chamber becomes too full, there is a secondary chamber waiting to ensure that no waste touches the pump (there is a mechanism in the primary chamber that doesn’t allow extra waste to touch the pump). When the material excavation has been completed, the discharge value is utilised to dispose of the materials inside of the primary chamber.

Five Benefits of Non Destructive Digging

Whether you need to install a brand-new set of traffic lights, pothole the ground for repairs or work on a landscaping project, VAC2U’s vacuum truck hire and vacuuming solutions can help you with any residential or civil project today.

           What is Non-Destructive Digging?

Non-destructive digging, otherwise known as vacuum excavation, is widely regarded as the safest and most efficient way to expose or excavate underground utilities. This excavation technique uses ‘sucker trucks’ which combine air suction, compressed air lances and high-pressured water jets to expose buried utilities. Non-destructive digging is suitable for excavation projects that require working around buried utilities such as telecommunication lines, storm drains, gas lines and water mains.

           Why is Non-Destructive Digging important?

Installing or uncovering essential buried assets can be extremely complex. Damaging an essential utility such as internet cables, sewer lines and power cables can be costly and will delay a project, not to mention the massive disruption and inconvenience to local communities. VAC2U truly believe that non-destructive digging is the way of the future and we enjoy showcasing our cost effective, safe and efficient sucker trucks.

Why is Non-Destructive Digging so popular?

Non-destructive digging methods have become increasingly popular in recent decades as it alleviates many risks that are commonly associated with conventional digging via an excavator or shovel. Non-destructive digging has proven to significantly decrease the risk of line strikes and utility damage as well as decreasing project duration and overall costs.

           When is Non-Destructive Digging used?

Vacuum excavation is commonly used for maintenance, repairs or installation work in the oil, gas and mining sectors alongside a variety of both domestic and civil engineering projects. Non-destructive digging is effective for projects such as potholing and trenching, precision excavation, light pole installation, traffic signal installation and landscaping. Vacuum excavation provides a safe alternative to mechanical digging which does not sacrifice on excavating power. Here is a list of reasons why you should consider using non-destructive digging for your next civil or domestic engineering project.

           1. Safety First

Non-destructive digging is the safest method of excavation by far. The underground of a worksite is densely packed with vital lines, cables and pipes which can be poorly mapped. When working to repair or install new underground services, traditional excavation methods can damage these important services, putting operators and property at risk. Non-destructive digging allows for safe excavation while working around underground gas mains, sewer pipes and water pipes without risk to the property or operators working on the site.

           2. Cost Effective

The cost benefits of non-destructive digging quickly stack up. This is due to its lower risk for underground utilities damage, minimal liabilities and higher level of worker safety. Traditional excavation methods can be time-consuming and have a higher chance of damaging buried utilities. Damaging these utilities is incredibly costly, and there is a risk of disrupting thousands of people by damaging an underground utility. These errors can also potentially delay the project, resulting in repairs and can exponentially increase labour costs. Non-destructive digging uses an effectively planned and logical approach to getting into the ground with minimal chance of destruction. Vacuum excavation is a cheaper alternative as it only typically requires one sucker truck and one skilled operator who can handle the entire project, saving on labour costs.

           3. Environmentally friendly

Non-destructive digging is widely regarded as the most environmentally friendly way of excavation. Vacuum excavation trucks are fully equipped to safely remove all types of debris, allowing for quick clean and precise excavations. The debris are sucked through a tube, stored into a tank. This allows for a clean worksite and ensures that the land is easily restored to its initial state after the evacuation. Non-destructive digging is also significantly quieter in comparison to mechanical excavation, minimising disruptions to local communities and surrounding wildlife.

           4. Damage Prevention

Mechanical digging can be prone to accidents, including the damage of buried materials and utilities. Prior to beginning a non-destructive digging project, utility detection equipment is used to map the area and minimise any potential damage. Non-destructive digging extracts the earth through a small ‘surgical’ opening where the excavation takes place. A high-powered vacuum insertion is made to remove dirt, then the underground utilities are safely exposed without damage to the protective coatings of pipes and cables.

           5. Faster than mechanical excavators

With congested underground easements and roadways, it is becoming increasingly important to identify the location of any underground utilities before a project commences. Non-destructive digging allows for both the exposure of energised buried lines as well as the recording of depths and locations of buried utilities. Once an accurate map of buried utilities is made, any future constructions can be accurately planned. This saves the slow and tedious process of hand digging to uncover utilities. Using the non-destructive digging method increases productivity and efficiency, making it faster than traditional digging methods.

The benefits of using non-destructive digging are clear, vacuum excavation methods provide a safe, sustainable and cost-effective alternative to mechanical digging.
What is Hydro Excavation?

We offer our hydro excavator for hire across South East Queensland. Find out what a hydro excavator is here.

Hydro excavation is a non-destructive digging process using high pressurised water to disperse and break the ground material under the target surface level. The hydro excavation process creates a slurry that is sucked up and removed from the excavated hole into a vacuum tank. The vacuum excavation truck then transports the slurry to a soil transfer or disposal plant to be safely processed and disposed.

Hydro excavation equipment combines water jets along with a roots blower vacuum. The water jets produce the high pressurised water that loosens and breaks the ground material. The roots blower is used as a high Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM) vacuum to remove the slurry from the underground hole into the vacuum tank.

Non-destructive digging conducted from hydro excavators is becoming increasingly popular for excavation projects, particularly working around underground utilities such as telecommunication cables, pipelines, storm drains, gas lines and water mains. The hydro excavation process is a safe and efficient alternative when it comes to digging around and exposing utilities.

Using hydro excavation avoids damage to underground utilities. Preventing damage to utilities will eliminate high expenses that would otherwise be needed for repairs and restoration. The fewer repairs and restoration means a quicker turnaround for completing the overall project as scheduled.

Hydro excavation also allows us to dig deep holes without leaving lasting damage on the environment. However, treatment and recovery will commence if there is any unintentional environmental damage.

How does Underground Service Location work?

We offer underground service location across South East Queensland. Find out how underground service location works here.

Underground service location or utility mapping is an underground construction process that produces a map showing the position and placement of buried underground utilities. Service location involves detecting underground utilities such as sewers, electric cables, telecommunication cables, gas and water mains. The most comprehensive detailed utility map results come from the combination of the service location along with a topographical survey. This combination accurately shows everything that is located underground or directly related to the above ground.

When will you need Underground Service Location?

If your construction project requires breaking through surface level to the underground, a utility map will become your most used possession as it shows the exact positions of the buried underground utilities you may encounter. The utility map provides you with correct information to help prevent you from digging into or damaging any utilities that may cause injury or harm to on-site workers or the public.

When you have full knowledge of underground service locations prior to undertaking any underground construction, you have full capacity to avoid and reroute underground utilities during the planning stage of a construction contract. This utility avoidance and rerouting will limit unexpected project costs by eliminating damage to utilities.

           Underground Service Location Techniques

Service location can go as far as using electromagnetic locating, ground-penetrating radars, electro-magnetic induction and vacuum excavation techniques. These techniques can provide more specific utility information to identify the service locations with accurate depths and orientation, along with identifying the exact types of utilities buried underground on the construction site.
